The Associated Press reporter adds on......"Bush ordered the Treasury Department today to freeze the financial assets of additional members of the repressive military junta. He also acted to tighten controls on U.S. exports to Myanmar, also known as Burma, and called on the governments of China and India to do more to pressurise the government of the Southeast Asian nation."
Monks have been beaten and killed. Thousands of pro-democracy protesters have been arrested," Bush said in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House.
"Burma's rulers continue to defy the world's just demands to stop their vicious persecution."
Last month, tens of thousands of people turned out for rallies, which started as protests of sharp fuel increases and later snowballed into the largest show of government dissent in decades. The junta claims that 10 people were killed when troops opened fire on demonstrators to disperse them, but diplomats and dissidents say the death toll is likely much higher.
In response, the Bush administration froze the assets that individuals responsible for the crackdown have in U.S. banks or other financial institutions under U.S. jurisdiction. The administration also prohibited any U.S. citizens from doing business with the designated individuals. Among those targeted for the sanctions were the junta leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, and the No. 2 man in the military regime, Deputy Senior Gen. Maung Aye.
The crackdown also prompted first lady Laura Bush to make personal appeals for support for Myanmar citizens, saying the acts of violence "shame the military regime."
Mrs. Bush joined him as he announced his new sanctions.............
The president said the Treasury Department has designated 11 more leaders of the junta for sanctions. Bush also issued a new executive order that designates an additional 12 individuals and entities for sanctions...........
......."Burmese authorities claim they desire reconciliation. Well, they need to match those words with actions," Bush said.
The junta says it detained nearly 3,000 people in connection with the protests, that hundreds remain in custody and that it is still hunting for others. But the regime has released three prominent detainees, including the country's best-known comedian, as well as a popular actor and his wife.
On Thursday, the U.N. envoy to Myanmar said the country's military rulers could be offered incentives to move toward democratic reforms..........
However the disturbing fact is, the envoy Ibrahim Gambari, so far has failed to bring about a dialogue between the junta leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, and detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
..........Responding to the continued crackdown, the State Department also has designated more than three dozen additional government and military officials and their families ineligible to receive visas to travel to the United States.
On Thursday, Bush punished Myanmar for alleged "human trafficking," the forced labor and prostitution that the United States calls a modern-day form of slavery. The Bush administration determined that Myanmar is ineligible for U.S. aid for failing to meet the minimum standards of fighting trafficking or make significant efforts to do so.

Kyaw Thu and wife reach Thai refugee camp
Kyaw Thu had been running from authorities after a public show of support for the protesting monks. Along with the Burmese comedian Zarganar, he had gathered together celebrities to supply the monks at the Shwedagon pagoda with food and water. "We are Buddhist. All Buddhists have to support this movement," the movie heart-throb said.
Zarganar has been arrested, but Kyaw Thu (above, far left with Zarganbar next to him) got away before security forces raided his and his parents' homes. The actor, star of the 2005 film True Love, is renowned for his social work. He helps run the Free Funeral Services Society, which allows the poor to arrange a decent burial for their loved ones. He has donated large sums to the charity and even volunteered as a hearse driver and gravedigger.

Usernames and passwords for more than 100 e-mail accounts at embassies and governments worldwide have been posted online.Using the information, anyone can access the accounts that have been compromised. Computer Sweden has verified the posted information and spoken to the person who posted them.
The posted information includes names of the embassies and governments, addresses to e-mail servers, usernames and passwords.Among the organisations on the list are the foreign ministry of Iran, the Kazakh and Indian embassies in the USA and the Russian embassy in Sweden.
Security consultant Dan Egerstad is the man responsible for posting the information. He speaks openly about the leak when Computer Sweden contacts him.
“I did an experiment and came across the information by accident”, he says. Dan Egerstad says he never used the information to log in to any of the compromised accounts in order not to break any laws.
Computer Sweden has been able to confirm that the login details for at least one of the accounts is correct.
Dan Egerstad forwarded an e-mail sent on the 20 august by an employee at the Swedish royal court to the Russian embassy. The person who sent the e-mail, in which she declines an invitation to the Russian embassy, has confirmed that she sent the e-mail.
“Yes, that is right. We did decline the invitation. As far as I can remember I did send the e-mail”, she says.
“When something like this happens you usually contact people and ask them to fix it. But in this case it felt too big for that, calling to other countries”, says Dan Egerstad.
Of the compromised account, ten belong to the Kazakh embassy in Russia. Around 40 belong to Uzbeki embassies and consulates around the world. The Indian and Russian embassies login details for e-mail accounts at the UK Visa office in Nepal was also posted. Login details for the foreign ministry of Iran, the Kazakh and Indian embassies in the USA and the Russian embassy in Sweden were also posted.
“I hope this makes them take action. Hopefully faster than ever before, and I hope they become a bit more aware of security issues,” Dan Egerstad says.
Computer Sweden has contacted both the Russian and Indian embassies in Stockholm for comment. Neither was aware of the leaked details, but declined to confirm the information and give comment.
Later on the same day and speaking to a reporter from Swedish television, the Russian embassy in Stockholm confirms that the leaked password was valid, but says it has now been changed.
Computer Sweden has not published where the login details can be found. The information in this story has been verified by Computer Sweden without using any of the published login details.

The current controversy between the ruling UPA coalition and the Left on the one hand, and the right on the other, is entirely a political confrontation. This unwarranted war of words and egos should never overshadow the very important accomplishments in the realm of research and technology but should be responsibly resolved within the political framework. The issue of nuclear energy at hand is not a laughing matter. Not only is it linked with the destiny of 1.2 billion Indians today, but it will be of remarkable consequence to innumerable billions in the generations that are to follow. What is at stake is not just the ‘present’ but the ‘future’ as well.
During debates and arguments it has come to the notice of intellectuals and concerned citizens such as this writer that the Muslim community in India as a whole is being seen to be opposing the current nuclear deal. This illusionary and concocted idea is presented before the people of India as the dominant opposition to the 123 agreement. Such allegations, with no evidence whatsoever, will throw the Muslim community in India into another confrontation with liberal and progressive-minded Indians in the future.
What is important for the world to know is that Indian Muslims, in their psyche, behaviour and views, are as progressive as, if not more than, other outwardly looking communities across India. The desires and aspirations of younger Indian Muslims are the same as those of Hindu and Christian communities in India. For example, one would find educated Muslim boys and girls lined up in as much number and in similar proportions as any other social group in front of diplomatic missions of countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. The educated middle class amongst the Muslim community is no more inclined to be content with meagrely paid and often exploitative jobs in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and other countries in the Middle East. Above all, newly educated Muslims indeed have already become aware of the fact that future jobs and satisfying professional lives are to be found more in India than abroad.
Yes, Muslims of the older vintage do get sensitive at the utterance of the word ‘Israel’, but these are dying noises. What is common knowledge is that India has since long balanced foreign policy options with both the Palestinian cause — notwithstanding the great personal affinity with the late Yasser Arafat displayed by many of its leaders — and Israel. Who in India now does not know that Israel is one of the largest suppliers of defence equipment and ammunition to the country? It has partnered in a number of high technology agricultural projects. You will even find Israelis undertaking tulsi cultivation in some parts of Uttar Pradesh. One finds Israelis living in large numbers in many parts of the Himalayas, albeit as tourists. Even so, I have yet to come across any Muslim in these specific areas or elsewhere who is agitated over government policy.
It is, however, important to say that George W. Bush is not the United States and the United States is not Israel. The Muslims in India are now mature enough to know the difference and judge accordingly.
I am at pains as an Indian Muslim to understand as to how a highly respected and distinguished political party can use the Muslim community as a whole as canon fodder, so to speak, in order to make its own vulnerable position secure. It is also not uncommon to find heretic and self-centred and self-proclaimed leaders within the Muslim community. They are indeed far too great in number and we all know who they are and how much political and social support they actually claim from the larger community across India.
In this context it is important to highlight an important political reality: the Muslims in India are the most secular voters. I know of no political party in India for which the Muslims have voluntarily not voted. As psephologists will confirm, when the BJP came to power, a good proportion of Muslims did indeed vote for that party. This is evidence good enough to make the point that it would be wrong on the part of any single party to say that they represent the whole of the Muslim community in India — or that any one single party can influence the community as a whole.
Political parties must not project the Muslim community as a whole as a political constituency. It is a sum of heterogeneous groups. In any case, now there is an educated class emerging within the Muslim community and no one can afford to ignore its point of view.

WASHINGTON -- A sharply divided House brushed aside a veto threat Wednesday and passed legislation that would order President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq by Oct. 1.
The 218-208 vote came as the top U.S. commander in Iraq told lawmakers the country remained gripped by violence but was showing some signs of improvement.
Passage puts the bill on track to clear Congress by week's end and arrive on the president's desk in coming days as the first binding congressional challenge to Bush's handling of the conflict now in its fifth year.
"Our troops are mired in a civil war with no clear enemy and no clear strategy for success," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
Republicans promised to stand squarely behind the president in rejecting what they called a "surrender date" handed to the enemy.
"Al-Qaida will view this as the day the House of Representatives threw in the towel," said Rep. Jerry Lewis of California, ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee.
The $124.2 billion bill would fund the war, among other things, but demand troop withdrawals begin on Oct. 1 or sooner if the Iraqi government does not meet certain standards. The bill sets a nonbinding goal of completing the troop pull out by April 1, 2008, allowing for forces conducting certain noncombat missions, such as attacking terrorist networks or training Iraqi forces, to remain.
House and Senate appropriators agreed to the legislation earlier this week. The Senate was expected to clear the measure Thursday, sending it to the president.
While Bush was confident the bill would ultimately fail because Democrats lacked the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto, he kept up pressure on lawmakers. On the same day as the House vote, the president dispatched his Iraq commander, Gen. David Petraeus, and other senior defense officials to Capitol Hill to make his case: Additional forces recently sent to Iraq are yielding mixed results and the strategy needs more time to work.
Petraeus told reporters sectarian killings in Baghdad were only a third of what they were in January, before Bush began sending in additional U.S. forces. He added that progress in the troubled western Anbar province was "breathtaking," and that he thought Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was "doing his best" at leading the country.
But "the ability of al-Qaida to conduct horrific, sensational attacks obviously has represented a setback and is an area in which we're focusing considerable attention," Petraeus said.
Petraeus said he would not touch on the "minefield of discussions about various legislative proposals," but he noted that the new strategy in Iraq was just beginning. He said he planned to provide more details in early September.
Petraeus briefed his findings to lawmakers in a private room, where protesters outside chanted "Troops home now!" Republicans and Democrats alike emerged to say Petraeus had only confirmed their positions.
"This briefing reinforced our view that the solution in Iraq is a political solution," Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters. Also confirmed, he said, was "our belief that we must hold the Iraqis accountable for achieving real progress."
Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader, said Petraeus acknowledged there were challenges. "But considering where we are, I think the general feels good about the progress thus far," Boehner said.
Bush said he stands firm on his latest strategy for winning the war and dismisses as counterproductive the Democratic call for withdrawal.
"That means our commanders in the middle of a combat zone would have to take fighting directions from legislators 6,000 miles away on Capitol Hill," Bush said this week. "The result would be a marked advantage for our enemies and a greater danger for our troops."
Petraeus' comments Wednesday put a finer point on when the much-awaited decision about the length of the U.S. troop buildup may come, saying he will make an assessment of the conditions in Iraq in early September, and report back to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other military leaders.
Gates has said he expects the assessment this summer, but this is the first time military leaders said it would not be until September.

"The European Union's antitrust agency threatened Microsoft today with fines of up to $4 million a day and claimed that the company is overcharging for the information rivals need to make their products work smoothly with Windows", reports Computerworld , today.
..........Microsoft, however, immediately said the EU is overreaching. "It's hard to see how the Commission can argue that even patented innovation must be made available for free," Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, said in a statement.
In a news conference today, EU Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd voiced the agency's impatience. "It is a very unusual situation. It is the first time we have been confronted by a company which has failed to comply with an antitrust decision. So we are in somewhat unknown territory."
"This is a company which apparently does not like to comply with antitrust decisions," Todd said.
Microsoft lost a 2004 ruling in the EU, which fined the company $613 million and said it must offer protocol documentation to other vendors so that they can make their server software interoperable with Windows clients and servers. In July 2006, the Commission slapped Microsoft with another fine -- this one totaled $357 million -- for not providing complete documentation and not making previously-set deadlines.
The latest fine, if levied, could amount to as much as $4 million and be applied retroactively to July 13, 2006. An additional daily fine of $661,000 could also be applied to the months between December 2005 and July 2006.
Microsoft objected on almost every level.
"Microsoft has spent three years and many millions of dollars to comply with the European Commission's decision," said Smith. "We submitted a pricing proposal to the Commission last August and have been asking for feedback on it since that time. We're disappointed that this feedback is coming six months later and in its present form, but we're committed to working hard to address the Commission's Statement of Objections as soon as we receive it."
Smith blasted the Commission for trying to force Microsoft to give away its intellectual property. "The proposed findings suggest that unless our intellectual property is innovative and patentable, it has to be made available royalty free. That has never been the standard for software or other intellectual property."
Not so fast, responded Todd: "The Commission does not want Microsoft to give away the fruits of its research for free." But the fees it's proposed are out of line.
"It is regrettable that the Commission has been obliged to take this step," Todd said. "But it is solely the attitude of this company that has led to this problem."

Personal View
It seems 'the battle of wits' that started last week at the US Supreme Court, as speculated in my Feb 23rd post, "Microsoft Case May Have Global Reach", has been spreading it's spider-net to strangle Microsoft in other parts of the world too.That the world is divided on US politically, Microsoft is but a victim of vendetta and political vengeance of the bi-party political divide that is roasting with rising heat with Mitt Romney Joining 2008 US Presidential Race on the 2nd week of Feb. last.
This is more so now and shall be at it's worst ebb, I may be excused to add, but with almost dead certainty, as the fight this time there in US is not just confined between two political parties rather gone down much critical, being gender-biased.
As the entire 'Corporate World' is under the dark cloud of speculations and rumours spreading their wings, let the 'Final Verdict' on Microsoft be expedited 'expediently' with greater urgency and time-bound.

“Other actions by the Chinese government send a different message,” Cheney told the Australian-American Leadership Dialogue, a private organization that promotes ties between the two countries.
“Last month’s anti-satellite test, China’s continued fast-paced military buildup are less constructive and are not consistent with China’s stated goal of a peaceful rise,” he said.
.......The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Cheney’s remarks. Many government offices were closed Friday for the weeklong Lunar New Year holiday.
Beijing previously said its Jan. 11 firing of a missile into a defunct weather satellite was for scientific purposes, but the test was widely criticized as a provocative demonstration of China’s growing military clout.
Washington said the test — which made China only the third nation after the United States and Russia to use weapons beyond the atmosphere — undermined efforts to keep weapons out of space. Beijing countered by saying the United States is blocking a possible global treaty that would ban weapons in space.
China’s military has grown rapidly along with its economy in recent years, prompting concern that the balance of military power in the Pacific could start to shift away from the United States.
China said in late December it was strengthening its military to thwart any attempt by Taiwan to push for independence, but vowed it was committed to the peaceful development of its 2.3 million-strong military, the world’s largest.
Hope on North Korea?
Regarding the North Korea deal, Cheney said it represented “a first hopeful step” that would “bring us closer” to a nuclear-free Korean peninsula — but he also sounded a note of caution.
“We go into this deal with our eyes open,” he said. “In light of North Korea’s missile test last July, its nuclear test in October and its record of proliferation and human rights abuses, the regime in Pyongyang has much to prove.”
..............“The notion that free countries can turn our backs on what happens in places like Afghanistan or Iraq or any other possible safe haven for terrorists is an option that we simply cannot indulge,” he said.
Cheney, a key backer of the Iraq war, praised Prime Minister John Howard for sending troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, saying Australians had won the respect of the world through their support of the fight against terror.
He said that if the U.S.-led coalition leaves Iraq before domestic forces can handle security, violence among rival factions would spread throughout the country and beyond.
“Having tasted victory in Iraq, jihadists would look for new missions,” joining the Taliban fighting in Afghanistan and spreading “sorrow and discord” across the Middle East and further afield, he said.
“Such chaos and mounting danger does not have to occur. It is, however, the enemy’s objective,” Cheney said. “For the sake of our own long-term security, we have a duty to stand in their way.”

Mitt Romney formally stepped into the Republican Presidential field on Tuesday morning, accelerating a race that is almost at full speed nearly a year before the nominating process starts.
Willard Mitt Romney was born in 1947, in Detroit, Mich. Romney, who is Mormon, says his parents named him for two well-known Mormons: John Willard Marriott, the founder of Marriott Hotels, and Chicago Bears Quarterback Milton Mitt Romney.
Romney, who until last month served as governor of Massachusetts, chose to make the announcement in the state where he was born -- and where his father served as governor in the 1960s, potentially boosting his name recognition in a place where an early Republican primary will be held next year.
"Innovation and transformation have been at the heart of America's success from the very beginning,"...... "And if there were ever a time when innovation and transformation were needed in government, it is now."
Seizing on an increasingly familiar refrain on both sides of the 2008 race -- the need for experience -- Romney said that now is not the time for an American president who has, "never run a corner store, let alone the largest enterprise in the world."
A father of five, Mitt Romney Mitt Romney , 59, brings personal wealth, dashing looks and business credentials to a race that is relatively open. Although Arizona Sen. John McCain has led the Republicans in the early stages, he has not overpowered the socially conservative wing of the party, leaving room for a challenge from the right.
