The New Muslim-4:- A Tale Of Two Sisters--Samina & Zarina Sheikh Yasim
Higher education didn't come easy to sisters Samina and Zarina. So they went against tradition, fought for it and ended up with admissions in courses of their choice. They could have succumbed like many others, but they chose to fight for their rights, setting an example for many others to follow.
Samina, is a student of BSC , at Mumbai’s prestigious St Xavier’s College and Zarina Sheikh Yasim, is studying Commerce, at Maharashtra College. They both want to become professors.
Zarina said, we read the Quran and follow his (Prophets) edicts. Prophet was never against education. Instead he wanted all to study. The girls said they knew they were on the correct path. That was their strength.
And there was then Mohammad Abdullah, an uncle. He was not frightened of the cleric and he took the girls under his wings. Abdullah was now more determined than the girls to see they went to college.
Abdullah said, Prophet had said anyone can go to China in pursuit of education. China was far from Arabia and his message was that one could go as far as China to seek education. And he never discriminated between genders.
The uncle knew that only an argument such as this could beat back the cleric, anything else would have been irreligious or unislamic, and would have thus further strengthened the cleric’s case.
Thus armed, he took on the cleric. He went to court seeking protection for the family from the cleric and his associates. Emboldened by the fact that the parents were scared, he had turned up his opposition.
He had them assaulted and threatened to get the girls kidnapped or murdered. This was despite giving the local police an undertaking that he will stay away from the girls.
Abdullah said the family first complained to the police. But they did not lodge our complaint and when they did finally on pressure from some community leaders, they refused to act against the cleric.
The high court was more sympathetic. The cleric was summoned. But he wasn’t changing his mind. He told the court that Islam does not permit women to study and therefore the girls shouldn’t go to college.
The court overruled him, of course, and the police were instructed to provide protection to the family. And the girls, it added, could go to college without fear of the cleric or anyone else.
Samina Sheikh Yasim and Zarina Sheikh Yasim live in one of Mumbai’s many chawls.
There are 20 families living in their building in a mostly Muslim neighbourhood of Madanpura. And each of the 20 establishments is quite tiny, just enough for four humans to eat and sleep.
The cleric probably understood that. But his problem was something else; he didn’t want them to go to college. Like others that age, he wanted Samina and Zarina to drop out of school, get married and raise a family.
They are a god-fearing family. The local cleric is much revered and feared. So, when Samina and Zarina said they wanted to study more, go to college after school, the family ran into the cleric.
He ruled that it was unislamic for girls to go to college, said Samina, the elder of the two. And for good measure he threw in a few more scary thoughts, college-going girls are characterless, he told the parents.
As my father is a simple peace loving person and mother a housewife they started pressuring us to drop out, Samina said.The cleric was also taking some direct action against the girls.
One day, he found Samina with her head buried in a book, the physics course book, and gave her one tight slap. I should not be studying in the passage, he told me, said Samina.
Our parents were succumbing to pressure. We were frightened but were determined not to abandon studies at any cost, said Zarina..........
Things are better, but the battle with the critic has left behind some scars. The conservatives accuse us of defaming the religion and the community, said Samina. And that hurts.
But there are those educated members of the community who understand. That matters. Also, they have heard that more girls want to follow them now. And the fear of the cleric is gone. Almost.

Myanmar : New Sanctions Imposed By Bush
DEB RIECHMANN, reports in The SeattleTimes , "For the second time in two months, President Bush announced sanctions against Myanmar to punish the military-run government and its backers for the recent violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.".........
The Associated Press reporter adds on......"Bush ordered the Treasury Department today to freeze the financial assets of additional members of the repressive military junta. He also acted to tighten controls on U.S. exports to Myanmar, also known as Burma, and called on the governments of China and India to do more to pressurise the government of the Southeast Asian nation."
Monks have been beaten and killed. Thousands of pro-democracy protesters have been arrested," Bush said in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House.
"Burma's rulers continue to defy the world's just demands to stop their vicious persecution."
Last month, tens of thousands of people turned out for rallies, which started as protests of sharp fuel increases and later snowballed into the largest show of government dissent in decades. The junta claims that 10 people were killed when troops opened fire on demonstrators to disperse them, but diplomats and dissidents say the death toll is likely much higher.
In response, the Bush administration froze the assets that individuals responsible for the crackdown have in U.S. banks or other financial institutions under U.S. jurisdiction. The administration also prohibited any U.S. citizens from doing business with the designated individuals. Among those targeted for the sanctions were the junta leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, and the No. 2 man in the military regime, Deputy Senior Gen. Maung Aye.
The crackdown also prompted first lady Laura Bush to make personal appeals for support for Myanmar citizens, saying the acts of violence "shame the military regime."
Mrs. Bush joined him as he announced his new sanctions.............
The president said the Treasury Department has designated 11 more leaders of the junta for sanctions. Bush also issued a new executive order that designates an additional 12 individuals and entities for sanctions...........
......."Burmese authorities claim they desire reconciliation. Well, they need to match those words with actions," Bush said.
The junta says it detained nearly 3,000 people in connection with the protests, that hundreds remain in custody and that it is still hunting for others. But the regime has released three prominent detainees, including the country's best-known comedian, as well as a popular actor and his wife.
On Thursday, the U.N. envoy to Myanmar said the country's military rulers could be offered incentives to move toward democratic reforms..........
However the disturbing fact is, the envoy Ibrahim Gambari, so far has failed to bring about a dialogue between the junta leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, and detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
..........Responding to the continued crackdown, the State Department also has designated more than three dozen additional government and military officials and their families ineligible to receive visas to travel to the United States.
On Thursday, Bush punished Myanmar for alleged "human trafficking," the forced labor and prostitution that the United States calls a modern-day form of slavery. The Bush administration determined that Myanmar is ineligible for U.S. aid for failing to meet the minimum standards of fighting trafficking or make significant efforts to do so.

Till people of countries are instigated or sponsored to practise and resort to the ideology, "LAWS are made to be broken", WORLD-PEACE shall continue to remain under the 'dark cloud' that hovers around the today's gloomy world.
DEMOCRACY, in any country with people of such mind-set of perception can never be fruitful, nor shall it be conducive for any other country to transform to an effective DEMOCRACY, under any other form of their present Govt. where people are made to be 'LAW abiding' by force, repression and fear.
It will only and only be possible when people themselves generate urge to inculcate CIVILITY by taking a leaf out of as their yardstick from, 'LAW abiding CIVILISED citizenry' of a few examplary DEMOCRATIC countries and continue to stead-fastly strive in that pursuit of transformation into an effective DEMOCRACY, vital for WORLD PEACE.

Kyaw Thu and wife reach Thai refugee camp
Kyaw Thu had been running from authorities after a public show of support for the protesting monks. Along with the Burmese comedian Zarganar, he had gathered together celebrities to supply the monks at the Shwedagon pagoda with food and water. "We are Buddhist. All Buddhists have to support this movement," the movie heart-throb said.
Zarganar has been arrested, but Kyaw Thu (above, far left with Zarganbar next to him) got away before security forces raided his and his parents' homes. The actor, star of the 2005 film True Love, is renowned for his social work. He helps run the Free Funeral Services Society, which allows the poor to arrange a decent burial for their loved ones. He has donated large sums to the charity and even volunteered as a hearse driver and gravedigger.

"Pratibha who?" and "Pratibha why?"
India is going to elect a new President -- her 13th since 1952 -- on July 19, 2007 . It is an indirect election, in so far as the President is elected not by the general electorate but by an electoral college comprising 776 Members of Parliament and 4896 Members of State Legislatures.
Even though the people do not elect the Rashtrapati, they have a vital stake in the Presidential poll since the winner will become Head of the Republic of India . They have a right to know whether the likely winner is worthy of becoming the Head of State of the world's largest democracy. They need to know whether the person embodies, as far as possible, the lofty ideals enshrined in the Constitution of India, of which he or she will be the Custodian, or he/she will be a rubber-stamp of those who have catapulted him/her to the high office.
This need to know about the antecedents of the likely winner in the forthcoming Presidential election has assumed menacing urgency after the United Progressive Alliance, the Congress-led ruling coalition, nominated Smt. Pratibha Patil as its candidate. When Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Congress president and UPA chairperson, announced her candidature on June 14, the first question that most Indians, including a majority of Congressmen, asked was: "Pratibha who?"
As Aroon Purie, the editor-in-chief of India Today has succinctly put it, the question that most Indians were asking by the end of June was: "Pratibha why?" This is because of a spate of scandals and controversies that the Indian media exposed, casting Smt. Patil as a person wholly unsuited to occupy the highest Constitutional office in India. After all, it is an office that has been graced by luminaries like Babu Rajendra Prasad, Dr. S. Radhakrishanan, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma and the outgoing President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
As highlighted by the Indian media, both print and electronic, Smt. Patil's name is linked, directly or indirectly, to two cancerous C's that are eating away the vitals of India's society and polity ? CORRUPTION and CRIMINALISATION OF POLITICS. The source of each of these media exposes was not some baseless allegation by the opposition, but thoroughly verifiable records of the Bombay High Court and the lower courts in Maharashtra, the Reserve Bank of India, official communication by the Department of Cooperatives of the Govt. of Maharashtra, bank documents, letters written by local Congress office-bearers on Congress party's own letterhead, and photographic and videographic material, etc. This shows the hollowness of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's unbecoming characterization of the media reports as "mud-slinging by the opposition".
The Congress leadership, which chose Smt. Pratibha Patil as its Presidential candidate, could not have been unaware of her highly questionable credentials. After all, due diligence is done even for the appointment of a low-level official in the Government of India. Therefore, two questions arise: Why did Smt. Sonia Gandhi hand-pick Smt. Pratibha Patil as the UPA's candidate for the Presidential election? And, even after the media thoroughly exposed her dubious antecedents, why did Smt. Sonia Gandhi not withdraw her candidature, when there was still time, and replace her with someone suitable for the high office? Is it because she wanted a pliable person in Rashtrapati Bhavan who would not only be loyal to the 'Nehru Dynasty' but also vulnerable?
A weak and vulnerable President, who owes her allegiance not to the Constitution of India but to the unaccountable 'Empress of India', and who is willing to sign on the dotted line could spell disaster for democracy in India. All of us know how one democratic institution after another, Parliament, State Legislatures, Judiciary at all levels, Civil Service, Political Executive, even the office of the Prime Minister -- has been devalued and enfeebled in India in recent times. What will happen to our democratic system, and to the Indian State, if even the office of the President of India is also similarly diminished? Moreover, the country has already had the bitter experience of what a pliable president can inflict on the people: it was because he was so weak and pliable that Indira Gandhi had selected Fakkruddin Ali Ahmed as President, and he did exactly what was expected of him -- he signed the Emergency proclamation promptly in June 1975, and thereby assisted in snuffing out democracy and the Constitution entirely.
It is this deep concern for the future of our Motherland that has prompted us to create this website. It has three objects:
- As the website's name itself suggests, it seeks to serve as a carrier of properly sourced information about Smt. Pratibha Patil. Concerned individuals, public-spirited organizations and media institutions are free to make suitable use of the information available on this site.
- This website is intended to serve as a platform for all right-thinking Indians to express their opinion on the central question: Does this tainted person deserve to become the President of India ? The voice of popular protest so generated, we hope, will reach every member of the electoral college and influence their conscience at the time of casting their vote.
- Thirdly, and most importantly, we sincerely hope that this endeavor becomes part of a broader people's campaign to cleanse our country's polity of the evils of corruption and criminalization, make our elected representatives and leaders of political parties more accountable, and rejuvenate each our democratic institutions with well-informed activism of the citizenry.

US Troops' Early Home-Coming
Whether April,1,2008 or October,1,2007, the date for 'withdrawing of troops from Iraq', issue should be weighed mainly by "The Message that is Echoed".
That the House is marginally divided by 218-208, speaks all in silence.
Be it what may,what matters the most is "Peace to Descend Unto Iraq", that can and only can be by the strong 'Will' and 'Proactive Action', by both the 'warring factions' and the 'moderates' along with the 'Govt.' there.

WASHINGTON -- A sharply divided House brushed aside a veto threat Wednesday and passed legislation that would order President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq by Oct. 1.
The 218-208 vote came as the top U.S. commander in Iraq told lawmakers the country remained gripped by violence but was showing some signs of improvement.
Passage puts the bill on track to clear Congress by week's end and arrive on the president's desk in coming days as the first binding congressional challenge to Bush's handling of the conflict now in its fifth year.
"Our troops are mired in a civil war with no clear enemy and no clear strategy for success," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
Republicans promised to stand squarely behind the president in rejecting what they called a "surrender date" handed to the enemy.
"Al-Qaida will view this as the day the House of Representatives threw in the towel," said Rep. Jerry Lewis of California, ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee.
The $124.2 billion bill would fund the war, among other things, but demand troop withdrawals begin on Oct. 1 or sooner if the Iraqi government does not meet certain standards. The bill sets a nonbinding goal of completing the troop pull out by April 1, 2008, allowing for forces conducting certain noncombat missions, such as attacking terrorist networks or training Iraqi forces, to remain.
House and Senate appropriators agreed to the legislation earlier this week. The Senate was expected to clear the measure Thursday, sending it to the president.
While Bush was confident the bill would ultimately fail because Democrats lacked the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto, he kept up pressure on lawmakers. On the same day as the House vote, the president dispatched his Iraq commander, Gen. David Petraeus, and other senior defense officials to Capitol Hill to make his case: Additional forces recently sent to Iraq are yielding mixed results and the strategy needs more time to work.
Petraeus told reporters sectarian killings in Baghdad were only a third of what they were in January, before Bush began sending in additional U.S. forces. He added that progress in the troubled western Anbar province was "breathtaking," and that he thought Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was "doing his best" at leading the country.
But "the ability of al-Qaida to conduct horrific, sensational attacks obviously has represented a setback and is an area in which we're focusing considerable attention," Petraeus said.
Petraeus said he would not touch on the "minefield of discussions about various legislative proposals," but he noted that the new strategy in Iraq was just beginning. He said he planned to provide more details in early September.
Petraeus briefed his findings to lawmakers in a private room, where protesters outside chanted "Troops home now!" Republicans and Democrats alike emerged to say Petraeus had only confirmed their positions.
"This briefing reinforced our view that the solution in Iraq is a political solution," Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters. Also confirmed, he said, was "our belief that we must hold the Iraqis accountable for achieving real progress."
Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader, said Petraeus acknowledged there were challenges. "But considering where we are, I think the general feels good about the progress thus far," Boehner said.
Bush said he stands firm on his latest strategy for winning the war and dismisses as counterproductive the Democratic call for withdrawal.
"That means our commanders in the middle of a combat zone would have to take fighting directions from legislators 6,000 miles away on Capitol Hill," Bush said this week. "The result would be a marked advantage for our enemies and a greater danger for our troops."
Petraeus' comments Wednesday put a finer point on when the much-awaited decision about the length of the U.S. troop buildup may come, saying he will make an assessment of the conditions in Iraq in early September, and report back to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other military leaders.
Gates has said he expects the assessment this summer, but this is the first time military leaders said it would not be until September.

Arrogance Befalls Congress in Punjab and Uttarakhand
Capt.Amarendra Singh, who "Ruled as a Dictator, acted as a Dictator,Lived as a Dictator" in Punjab, who had put the 'grand-old-man', the three times CM in Punjab 'Mr.Prakash Singh Badal', behind bars for 20 days, dug a 18-year-old culpable homicide case against the mighty Navjot Singh Sidhu, finally faces today the 'ringing of his death bell' like that of a 'Dictatorial CM' in Punjab.

Mitt Romney Joins 2008 US Presidential Race
Mitt Romney formally stepped into the Republican Presidential field on Tuesday morning, accelerating a race that is almost at full speed nearly a year before the nominating process starts.
Willard Mitt Romney was born in 1947, in Detroit, Mich. Romney, who is Mormon, says his parents named him for two well-known Mormons: John Willard Marriott, the founder of Marriott Hotels, and Chicago Bears Quarterback Milton Mitt Romney.
Romney, who until last month served as governor of Massachusetts, chose to make the announcement in the state where he was born -- and where his father served as governor in the 1960s, potentially boosting his name recognition in a place where an early Republican primary will be held next year.
"Innovation and transformation have been at the heart of America's success from the very beginning,"...... "And if there were ever a time when innovation and transformation were needed in government, it is now."
Seizing on an increasingly familiar refrain on both sides of the 2008 race -- the need for experience -- Romney said that now is not the time for an American president who has, "never run a corner store, let alone the largest enterprise in the world."
A father of five, Mitt Romney Mitt Romney , 59, brings personal wealth, dashing looks and business credentials to a race that is relatively open. Although Arizona Sen. John McCain has led the Republicans in the early stages, he has not overpowered the socially conservative wing of the party, leaving room for a challenge from the right.
